Power when you need it
Power over Ethernet (PoE) has become fairly common in many environments. The technology, defined mainly as 802.3af, allows carrying power in addition to data over standard Cat5 cables (also known as twisted-pair Ethernet).
In fact, many devices such as IP phones or video cameras are installed without a dedicated power supply within corporate environments, relying solely on PoE for power. This can become an issue when trying to perform Ethernet ghosting / NAC bypass using such devices, as most switches only care about carrying data and do not supply PoE.
The Sparkplug is a PoE injector - a direct solution to this kind of problem. Placed in-line between a PoE device and any upstream equipment (switch or otherwise), the Sparkplug injects a standard 48V into the "device" side.
Up to 15W of power can be provided by the Sparkplug - enough to run most PoE-based devices.
Easy to use
Just plug in the included wall adapter power supply and hook your PoE device to the same side of the Sparkplug. The other side is for the upstream network.
Have a look at the picture below for a visual example:
- 48V 40W power supply
- Plastic case (green)
Ethernet cables are not included!
The Sparkplug is shipped with a basic 3D-printed press-fit enclosure. This means you can easily swap the case and print your own, or even integrate the Sparkplug board directly into something else.
STL files for the included case are provided below, ready to be 3D-printed.
Two files are provided - one for the bottom of the enclosure and one for the top.
